The Guitar Arpeggio Compendium Scott McGill Anders Lazaret 9781484846575 Books Reviews

I read standard notation.... but the lack of TAB and a play-along CD (or at minimum a download link for audio examples), reduces this book from 5 stars to 3 for me. I like having them for myself, and while i admit they are "crutches", they are comfortable crutches that i enjoy having, and which speed up the absorption of new material for me. But I primarily object to their omission based on the sheer number of very good guitarists, who could potentially benefit greatly from this excellent tuition material, but who will not be able to due to their lack of ability to read music.

I learned to read music because at one point i wanted to be a transcriber, and i did transcribe a bit for Warner Publications in the 90's.... but i don't recall ever hearing a single album or live performance that i ever enjoyed less because i had learned the guitarist couldn't read notation.

TAB at the VERY least... it's omission is either lazy or elitist. One or the other.

i love Scott McGill, btw.
AMAZING BOOK!!!!

Very creative ideas in here! Has helped my playing a lot!!!!
If you want a book that give you many ways to play melodic ideas
and get you out of your comfort zone this is the book for you !
...then you want this book! Scott McGill is not just a theorist sitting in a classroom, but a true grandmaster of the guitar both in performance and study. He has performed on a few of my songs, and I personally know some of this students. All are proficient musicians, and all of them attribute that to Scott's teaching methodology. Part of his teaching is, of course, theory. One can play a mile a minute, but if you don't know where you're going with your playing, how good will it truly sound? This book is literally the Bible of arpeggios. Sevenths, ninths, elevenths, thirteens, straight, broken, from one to three octaves in virtually any mode played--this is the book that puts the knowledge in your grasp. And now I have a secret--I play keyboards and brass. Yes, this book has helped me better understand how guitar players perform and construct chords and arpeggios. This, in turn, has helped me become more aware of how I can write guitar parts into my songs.
I just pulled this out again after having it sit on the shelf for a while. This is generally really good material to learn the most efficient way to play just about any arpeggio you could imagine. However, there are a few editing mistakes you will need to fix. Just for a few examples are below
- The C7 (version1) descending arpeggio in the an Eb on the staff
- Minor 7 (version 1) picking pattern would make sense if the G was played on the 2nd string, but the fingering and string markings places the G on the 3rd string. Either string could works but the picking pattern notated would have you playing two down strokes one the same string if you play it as notated.
-Minor 7b5 arpeggio ascending has a weird fingering going from Gb (4) to Bb (2) in the second octave. It makes more sense to use 3 and then 4 and play the C on the 1st string with your 1st finger.

Scott is a great player and this material is pretty awesome, but keep in mind that there may be a few editing mistakes you may need to correct.
